Online Therapy Across PSYPACT States
Online therapy across PSYPACT states, with a real psychology practice behind the screen.
North Star Psychological Services provides secure online therapy for eligible adults located in participating PSYPACT jurisdictions. Work with a Washington, DC-based psychology practice for anxiety, OCD, ADHD, depression, trauma, grief, burnout, eating concerns, relationships, and major life transitions without needing to live near our Dupont Circle office.
Virtual care is available only when clinically appropriate and legally permitted. Eligibility depends on the specific psychologist’s authorization and your physical location at the time of the session.
A wider search for the right therapist
Sometimes the therapist who fits is not the therapist who happens to be five miles away.
Online therapy changed more than the commute. For many people, it changed the size of the search. You may be looking for someone with meaningful experience treating OCD, adult ADHD, trauma, perfectionism, eating concerns, psychosis, depression, or the particular kind of burnout that comes with being responsible for too much for too long.
You may also be tired of starting over. Perhaps you moved for work, split your time between states, travel frequently, accepted a federal posting, started graduate school somewhere new, or simply live in an area where the therapist pool is small. Cross-state telepsychology can make continuity and specialty fit easier in eligible situations.
North Star is based in Washington, DC, but eligible clients in participating PSYPACT jurisdictions may be able to meet with an authorized North Star psychologist virtually. The first step is not figuring out the compact yourself. Tell us where you are located and what you want help with, and we can tell you whether an appropriate virtual option may be available.
People often look for cross-state online therapy when:
- They want a psychologist with a more specific clinical specialty
- They moved and do not want to rebuild care from scratch
- Frequent work travel makes local-only therapy difficult to sustain
- They divide time between two participating jurisdictions
- They live somewhere with fewer specialty providers
- They want care from a practice experienced with demanding professional environments
Location still matters legally. The difference is that PSYPACT may give eligible clients more options than a neighborhood-only search.
How cross-state telepsychology works
What is PSYPACT?
PSYPACT is an interstate compact designed to facilitate telepsychology and certain temporary in-person psychology services across participating state boundaries. Psychologists do not automatically gain cross-state authority simply because a state joins the compact. They must meet PSYPACT requirements and receive the appropriate authorization.
For clients, the practical point is simpler: an appropriately authorized psychologist may be able to provide telepsychology to you while you are physically located in an eligible PSYPACT jurisdiction, subject to applicable laws, rules, clinical appropriateness, and the psychologist’s authorization.
Tell us where you will be located
Telepsychology rules depend on physical location. Share the state or jurisdiction where you expect to be during sessions.
We check clinician eligibility and fit
We consider which North Star psychologists are appropriately authorized for your location, along with specialty, schedule, goals, and clinical fit.
You meet through secure online therapy
If the location and clinician match are eligible, sessions can take place virtually without requiring you to travel to Washington, DC.
PSYPACT participation changes over time.
For the most current participating-jurisdiction information, review the official PSYPACT map. If you are unsure whether your location qualifies, contact North Star and we can help you check the practical next step.
Built for real schedules and real transitions
Online therapy can be especially useful when your life crosses state lines.
Cross-state therapy is not only about convenience. It can reduce the disruption that comes with travel, relocation, demanding work, school, caregiving, and the search for a clinician who understands the problem you actually want to treat.
Professionals who travel
Consultants, attorneys, executives, federal employees, physicians, researchers, and other professionals may spend significant time away from one home base. When the locations involved are eligible, telepsychology may make therapy easier to maintain through changing schedules and work travel.
People relocating for work or school
A move can interrupt therapy at exactly the moment you are dealing with the stress of a new job, graduate program, relationship transition, caregiving responsibility, or unfamiliar city. PSYPACT may create more continuity when your new location participates.
People seeking a specialty match
You may have local therapists nearby and still struggle to find someone with the right clinical experience. Expanding beyond your immediate area can matter when you are looking for treatment for OCD, trauma, adult ADHD, eating concerns, complex mood symptoms, or overlapping patterns.
People who divide time between states
Some people split time between family homes, campuses, offices, caregiving locations, or seasonal residences. Depending on the jurisdictions and clinician authorization, online therapy may reduce the need to suspend care every time your physical location changes.
Clients who value privacy and consistency
For some clients, virtual sessions are easier to fit around a tightly scheduled day and can offer more privacy than leaving an office or campus for an appointment. A consistent therapy hour can feel simpler when the logistics are lighter.
People whose local options are limited
If you live outside a large metro area, specialty therapy can be harder to find. PSYPACT can expand the geographic pool of psychologists you may be able to consider, while the same requirements around clinical fit and legal eligibility still apply.
Start with what is actually hard right now
Online therapy for anxiety, OCD, ADHD, trauma, depression, burnout, and more.
You do not need to arrive with a perfectly named diagnosis. Many clients come in with overlapping experiences: anxiety plus perfectionism, ADHD plus burnout, grief plus depression, trauma plus relationship difficulties, or intrusive thoughts mixed with reassurance seeking and uncertainty.
Anxiety and chronic worry
Therapy can help when your mind is always forecasting problems, work follows you home, decisions feel disproportionately high stakes, or you cannot relax without feeling that you are forgetting something important.
OCD and intrusive thoughts
When intrusive thoughts, checking, mental review, reassurance seeking, contamination fears, relationship doubts, or the need for certainty take over, therapy can focus on the cycle that keeps the symptoms active.
Adult ADHD
Therapy can help with task initiation, emotional regulation, working-memory strain, procrastination, shame, overwhelm, disorganization, and the exhaustion of using urgency as your main productivity system.
Trauma and PTSD
Trauma can show up as hypervigilance, avoidance, emotional numbness, intrusive memories, irritability, shame, relationship difficulties, or a body that seems to stay prepared for danger after the danger has passed.
Depression, grief, and disconnection
You may still be functioning while feeling flat, heavy, withdrawn, self-critical, unmotivated, or disconnected from the parts of life that used to matter. Therapy can help you understand the pattern and build a way forward that is more than simply pushing harder.
Burnout, perfectionism, and life transitions
Sometimes the problem is not one diagnosis. It is the cumulative strain of performing, adapting, caretaking, achieving, relocating, changing roles, or living through a period where the old version of your life no longer fits.
Therapy for people carrying a lot
A DC-based practice can still make sense when you live somewhere else.
North Star works in a city where many clients are used to high accountability, public-facing work, long hours, complex institutions, ambitious goals, and the expectation that they should be able to keep functioning no matter what is happening privately.
That experience can translate well beyond Washington. You may work in law in Texas, medicine in Florida, consulting in Illinois, higher education in North Carolina, technology in Colorado, public policy in Virginia, or a federal role that moves you between jurisdictions. The job titles differ, but the internal patterns can look familiar: overpreparing, second-guessing, never feeling fully off duty, having trouble asking for help, or measuring your well-being by whether you can still perform.
Online therapy can give you a place where competence is not the entry requirement. You can talk honestly about anxiety, resentment, grief, ambition, exhaustion, relationships, identity, career questions, or the fear that slowing down will make everything fall apart.
You may recognize yourself here if:
- You are succeeding on paper but feel increasingly depleted
- Your job requires constant judgment, precision, availability, or emotional control
- You travel enough that maintaining a local routine is difficult
- You keep postponing therapy because finding the “right” therapist feels like another project
- You want a clinician who can understand high achievement without automatically treating ambition as the problem
- You want support that is thoughtful, practical, and emotionally substantive
Where online therapy may be available
PSYPACT states and jurisdictions served through cross-state telepsychology
PSYPACT gives eligible psychologists a way to provide telepsychology across participating state lines. North Star may be able to work with you online if you are physically located in one of the participating jurisdictions below and the psychologist you are matched with is authorized to practice there.
The current PSYPACT participating-jurisdiction list includes:
Newly enacted in 2026
Alaska and Iowa passed PSYPACT legislation in 2026. Iowa is scheduled to become effective on July 1, 2027. If you are in Alaska or Iowa, contact us and we can help you understand whether online care is currently available from a North Star psychologist.
A quick note about location: PSYPACT rules and participating states can change, and not every North Star psychologist can practice in every PSYPACT jurisdiction. We will confirm whether online therapy is available where you will be located before you begin. You can also check the official PSYPACT map for the latest updates.
Not a therapy marketplace
Online therapy can still feel personal, consistent, and connected to a real practice.
Some people hear “online therapy” and picture a large platform where the relationship feels secondary to the app. North Star is a psychology practice first. Virtual care is simply one way eligible clients can meet with us.
A consistent clinician
Therapy works through an ongoing relationship, not a rotating queue. When you begin with a North Star clinician, the goal is continuity with the same therapist rather than repeatedly starting your story over.
Specialty-informed matching
The right fit is more than an available appointment. We consider what you want help with, the therapist’s experience, treatment approach, schedule, location eligibility, and the kind of working relationship you are looking for.
A practice you can actually contact
If you have questions about scheduling, therapist fit, location eligibility, fees, or how to begin, you can contact North Star directly rather than trying to solve every administrative question through an anonymous platform.
What to expect
Starting online therapy with North Star
Free phone consultation
Tell us what is bringing you to therapy, where you are physically located, what you hope will change, and any practical needs around schedule, travel, or clinician preferences. You do not need to know the perfect therapy category before you call.
Eligibility and therapist match
We look at legal location eligibility together with clinical fit. A therapist may be excellent for your concern but not authorized for your location, or authorized for your location but not the best specialty match. Both pieces matter.
Secure virtual sessions
If the match is appropriate, you meet online from an eligible location. Sessions can focus on the same substantive clinical work you would bring into an office: patterns, relationships, symptoms, decisions, emotion regulation, coping, behavior change, and the life you want to build.
Questions you can ask during your consultation
- Can a North Star psychologist legally see me while I am in my state?
- Which clinicians are authorized for my location?
- Who has experience with the concern I want to address?
- What happens if I travel to another state during treatment?
- Can I continue therapy if I relocate?
- What are your current availability, fees, and scheduling expectations?
Travel, moving, and continuity
Can you keep seeing your therapist if you travel or move?
Sometimes, but it depends on where you are physically located and whether your psychologist is authorized to practice there. Telepsychology is regulated based on jurisdiction, so changing states can change what is legally permitted even when you are meeting through the same laptop.
If you know you will be traveling, moving, spending part of the year somewhere else, or working temporarily from another jurisdiction, tell your therapist or North Star before the session. That gives the practice a chance to check whether care can continue from that location rather than discovering a problem at appointment time.
PSYPACT can make this easier across participating jurisdictions, but it does not erase location rules. The aim is continuity when legally and clinically possible, with clear planning when it is not.
Before travel or relocation, it helps to share:
- The state or jurisdiction where you will physically be
- The dates you expect to be there
- Whether the move is temporary, recurring, or permanent
- Whether you need uninterrupted weekly care
- Any upcoming changes to insurance, work, or school that could affect scheduling
Location questions are normal in telepsychology. Asking early is the easiest way to plan responsibly.
Evidence-based care, adapted to the person
Online therapy should still be clinically specific.
Virtual care is a format, not a treatment method. What matters is whether the therapy approach matches the problem you are working on. Depending on your needs and the clinician, treatment at North Star may draw from approaches such as CBT, ACT, ERP, DBT-informed skills, EMDR, IFS-informed work, behavioral strategies, or other evidence-based methods.
For anxiety and perfectionism
Therapy may focus on worry cycles, avoidance, uncertainty, overpreparation, self-criticism, people pleasing, boundaries, and the belief that you need to feel completely sure before you act.
For OCD and intrusive thoughts
When OCD processes are involved, treatment may focus on reducing compulsions, reassurance seeking, checking, mental rituals, and attempts to neutralize uncertainty rather than repeatedly debating whether the intrusive thought is true.
For trauma and emotional overwhelm
Therapy may help you understand triggers, increase regulation, process painful experiences, reduce avoidance or hypervigilance, and build more choice in situations that currently feel automatic or threatening.
The National Institute of Mental Health describes psychotherapy as treatment that may use different approaches depending on the person and the problem being addressed. Online delivery does not remove the need for thoughtful clinical matching.
Questions about PSYPACT online therapy
Frequently asked questions
What is PSYPACT and how does it affect online therapy?
PSYPACT is an interstate compact designed to facilitate telepsychology and certain temporary in-person psychology services across participating jurisdictions. It does not mean every psychologist can automatically practice in every participating state. Psychologists must meet PSYPACT requirements and hold the appropriate authority. For clients, this can expand access to psychologists outside the state where the practice is physically based, as long as the clinician is authorized for the client’s location and the service is clinically appropriate.
Can a North Star psychologist see me if I do not live in Washington, DC?
Possibly. Eligible North Star psychologists may be able to provide telepsychology to clients who are physically located in participating PSYPACT jurisdictions. Availability depends on the specific psychologist’s authorization, your location, clinical fit, schedule, and other applicable requirements. Contact North Star with the state or jurisdiction where you will be located during sessions, and we can help determine whether an appropriate virtual option may be available.
Is PSYPACT the same as being licensed in every state?
No. PSYPACT is not a blanket fifty-state psychology license. It is a compact with specific eligibility and authorization requirements. A psychologist practicing interjurisdictionally under PSYPACT must meet the compact’s requirements and follow applicable rules. That is why North Star checks the specific clinician and client location rather than making a general promise that every therapist can see every client everywhere.
Can I keep seeing my therapist if I move to another state?
Sometimes. Whether care can continue depends on where you move and whether your psychologist is legally permitted to practice there. If the new location is an eligible PSYPACT jurisdiction and the psychologist holds the appropriate authorization, continuity may be possible. If you know a move is coming, bring it up early so the practice can review options before the transition rather than after you arrive.
Can I attend an online therapy session while traveling?
It depends on the jurisdiction where you are physically located during the session. Even if you normally live in an eligible state, traveling elsewhere can change what is permitted. Tell your therapist or North Star before an out-of-state session so eligibility can be checked. Frequent travelers may want to discuss their typical travel pattern during the consultation process.
What kinds of concerns can North Star address through online therapy?
North Star works with adults navigating anxiety, OCD, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis-related concerns, trauma and PTSD, eating concerns, ADHD, grief, major life transitions, relationship stress, burnout, and men’s and women’s mental health. The right online match depends on the specific clinician’s experience, your needs, location eligibility, and whether virtual care is clinically appropriate for your situation.
Is online therapy effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, or ADHD?
Many evidence-based psychotherapy approaches can be delivered through telehealth when the format is appropriate for the client and treatment plan. The more important question is usually whether the clinician has the right experience and whether the treatment approach fits the concern. Someone seeking ERP for OCD may need a different match from someone seeking trauma-focused work, ADHD support, grief therapy, or help with burnout and perfectionism.
Do I have to choose a therapist before I contact North Star?
No. You can start by telling us what you want help with, where you are located, your schedule, and any preferences you already know. North Star can use that information to think through clinician availability, specialty fit, location eligibility, and next steps. You do not need to study every therapist bio or understand PSYPACT rules before making contact.
What if my state is not currently eligible for PSYPACT telepsychology?
If North Star cannot legally provide telepsychology in your location, the practice should not begin or continue cross-state care under PSYPACT there. Participation changes over time, so the official PSYPACT map is the best place to verify current jurisdiction status. You can also contact North Star to ask whether another legally appropriate option exists or whether eligibility may change in the future.
How do I check whether my state participates in PSYPACT?
You can start with the state list on this page and confirm the latest status on the official PSYPACT map. Because states can join the compact or move through different implementation stages, we also confirm your location before matching you with a psychologist. You do not need to sort through the licensing details yourself. Tell us where you will be during sessions and we can let you know whether a North Star psychologist is able to work with you there.
Is North Star an online-only therapy company?
No. North Star Psychological Services is a Washington, DC psychology practice with an in-person office near Dupont Circle as well as virtual care for eligible clients. Some clients prefer fully online therapy, some meet in person, and some use hybrid care when location, clinician availability, and clinical needs allow. The virtual option expands access to the practice rather than replacing the practice itself.
How do I get started with online therapy across PSYPACT states?
Schedule a free consultation with North Star and share a little about what is bringing you to therapy, where you will physically be during sessions, your scheduling needs, and any preferences you have for therapist experience or treatment style. We can then discuss location eligibility, possible clinician matches, current availability, fees, and what the next step would look like.
A wider search can lead to a better fit
You do not have to limit your therapist search to whoever happens to be nearby.
If you are in an eligible PSYPACT jurisdiction, North Star may be able to connect you with a psychologist whose experience, style, and availability fit what you are looking for. Start by telling us where you are located and what has been feeling hardest lately.
